The Children's Gallery has some exciting new
interactive exhibits. Please visit us soon.
Located in the Children's Gallery is a small 1940's aluminum carousel. Called a
"Kiddie Carousel" in the Allan Herschell Company catalog, it was created specifically
for small children to ride without the need for adults to accompany them. The horses
are child-size and the machine moves more slowly than a full sized carousel. The Kiddie
Carousel has been completely restored and while adults cannot ride on the machine, it is
a delight to the eyes.
In School Program: The Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum works closely with
schools to interpret appropriate aspects of local history. Speakers will visit classrooms
with artifacts, photos, slides and band organ music. A "Traveling Trunk" is available for
loan in the classroom to be used as a before or after Museum visit.
Bring the Museum to Your Classroom With
Traveling Trunks!
The Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum
offers two traveling trunks for use in the elementary-level classroom. These
trunks contain manipulative materials, books, fact sheets, music, and ideas
for activities and assignments. They can be easily adapted to all primary
grades.
Trunk 1, “Carousel Basics,” places the
carousel in its historical context, using a variety of secondary and primary
source documents. Students will explore the carousel factory’s place in the
local economy and in the history of the Niagara Frontier. They will gain an
understanding of the ride design process, and the practical factors that
influenced the evolution of amusement park rides. The trunk includes books,
music, examples of materials used in the fabrication of carousel animals,
and classroom activities.
Trunk 2, “The Art and Mechanics of the
Carousel,” includes materials that touch on the themes of Trunk #1, but also
takes a more in-depth look at the carousel. Excellent for art classes or
beginning physical science, it encourages students to think about the
artistic motifs present in a carousel, and what these motifs are meant to
communicate. It also explains the mechanics of the carousel, and contains
several hands-on kits and an experiment sheet that students can use during a
visit to the museum. The trunk also contains a form for an oral history
project, and project suggestions for language and visual arts classes.
The trunks can be used to
supplement a field trip, or independently of a visit. Upon request, a museum
representative will also visit your classroom with the trunk. You are
responsible for the pickup and return of your trunk unless it is coming to
your classroom with a museum representative. You may keep the trunk for one
week. To reserve a trunk, call 693-1885 or email
curator@carrouselmuseum.org.
