The Carving floor
Originally, the carving floor of the Allan Herschell Company. This is where carousel animals began to take shape. Carvers worked from large line drawings of animals. First a rough sketch of the animal was made on basswood or poplar wood. The basic outline was cut out using the large band saw. After the carvers finished the details, the parts were then glued together and smoothed before the animal was moved to the paint shop in the next room.
Currently, volunteer wood carvers work in this space. If you are interested in learning more about wood carving you can enroll in Beginner Carving Class in the Fall and Spring of each year! If you are interested, check out our adults program page for more information. |
