November 10th, 2023

11/10/2023

Hi Friends!

Today was our last day of celebrating Fall Children's Book Week. I hope all of you have enjoyed it as much as we have! Thank you so much to Executive Director Mr. Ian for reading The Monster at the End of this Book by Jon Stone and illustrated by Michael Smollin. This is one of Mr. Ian's favorite books and he did such a great job reading it!

Today's activity is bookmarks!

To wrap up Fall Children's Book Week we have some bookmarks to color! This is what they look like and you can download a printable copy here.

Children's Book Week: Cuddley Dudley

11/9/2023

Hi Friends!

I hope you enjoyed Cuddly Dudley by Jez Alborough. Thank you, Ms. Dru for reading it to us!

Today's Activity is Waterproof Penguins

Did you know that penguins have an oil-producing gland that help make their feathers waxy? The wax on their feathers repels the cold water and helps keep the penguins dry.

The instructions for today's activities are down below or you can download them here:

Children's Book Week Mechanimals and National STEM Day

11/9/2023

Hi Friends!

I hope you enjoyed Mechanimals by Christ Tougas. Thank you, Mr. Don for reading to us! It was a perfect book for National STEM Day. Happy National STEM Day, everyone!

Today's Activity: Build the Tallest Tower

For today we have a fun STEM challenge!

You are going to try and build the tallest tower using only popsicle sticks and clothespins! No glue, or tape, or anything else! Do you think you can do it? I know you can!

I'm going to wait right here while you Build!

Take your time! Remember if your tower falls you can always rebuild it.

Are you done? How Tall is it?...Woah that's Tall!

Here is a picture of my tower!

I'm so glad that we both built towers today! I had so much fun!

Fall Children's Book Week: Night Animals Need Sleep Too

11/7/2023

Hi Friends!

Thank you to Dr. Darren for reading Night Animals Need Sleep Too by Fianna Marino! This is such a great book! I hope you enjoyed it!

Today's Activity: Bat Echolocation Games

Bats are nocturnal animals (or night animals like in our book) that use echolocation. Animals that use echolocation make sound waves and listen for the echo. They use the delay in the echo to determine the distance of things. Echolocation lets animals move around in the dark so they can navigate, hunt, identify friends and enemies, and avoid obstacles.

Today I have two activities for you to play with friends or family members to learn how echolocation works. The instructions are below, but you can also download them here.

Fall Children's Book WEek: Thanks for Nothing!

11/7/2023

Hi Friends!

HAPPY FALL CHILDREN'S BOOK WEEK! I'm so happy I get to celebrate with all of you!
I hope you enjoyed Monday's story, Thanks for Nothing! by Ryan T. Higgins. I love the Mother Bruce books! Poor Bruce was trying to make a nice meal for all of his friends and his friends played with the food before he could cook it. His friends are so thankful for everything that Bruce does for them (whispering)and I think Bruce is thankful for all of his friends, even when they ruin his plans.

Today's Activity is making a Thankful Pumpkin!

After reading Thanks for Nothing! and with Thanksgiving at the end of the month I thought it was the perfect time to make Thankful Pumpkins!
Picture
I hope you have fun making these pumpkins! You can even make special Thankful Pumpkins to give away. I gave one Thankful Pumpkin to my boss, Mr. Ian and put another one on Mr. Darren's desk in the gift shop so anyone in the giftshop can see what I'm thankful for and be inspired to make their own!
Have fun!
