August First Friday Storytime

8/14/2023

Hi Friends!

Did you enjoy Surf's Up by Kwame Alexander with pictures by Daniel Miyares? I thought it was such a fun book! It shows how much fun reading can be!

This month's activity is a floating Surfboard STEM Challenge!

Materials Needed:
  • tub of water
  • scissors
  • 3 materials that you think might float
  • paper
  • pencil
  • pennies or some other weight like paper clips

Tub of Water
Picture
My 3 surfboard materials: a paper plate, aluminum foil, and foam
First I drew a surfboard onto the piece of paper and cut it out. This became my pattern for all of the other surfboards I made.
Picture
Second I cut out surfboards from the 3 materials that I chose.

Left to Right: Aluminum Foil, Paper Plate, Foam
Picture
Third I put the surfboards in my tub of water and put pennies on them one by one until they sunk to the bottom. Which material do you think held the most pennies?
Results:
Picture
The surfboard made out of a paper plate sunk when it had 4 pennies on it.
Picture
The surfboard made out of aluminum foil also sunk when it had 4 pennies on it.
Picture
The surfboard made out of foam sunk when it had 8 pennies on it. This makes it twice as strong as the other surfboards.

Try it at home!

Try this fun STEM challenge at home and tell me what materials you used and how many pennies your surfboards held up!

Have fun!
Ms. Marissa
